Q: What is the most common explanation associated for the reason behind engagement/wedding rings being worn of the third digit of the left hand?
A: Many ancient cultures believed that the left middle finger contained the “vein of love”, which ran from the left ‘ring’ finger directly to the heart. Thus expressions of love such as rings were worn on said finger.
By a Professional
First and foremost, I recommend that you visit a local jewelry retailer for a professional sizing. This will ensure that you get the best fit.
If you can’t make it to a local jeweler or you just can’t wait to order your favorite ring, follow the steps below to size yourself.

To Use
• Your fingers are largest in warm weather and at the end of the day. It’s usually best to measure during these times so that your ring will not be too tight fitting.
• Wrap rings are a little top heavy (because of the larger stone on top and skinny wire band) and tend to drift to the side occasionally. Measure your finger size with a small sizer or a string to get the best fit for wrap rings (don’t measure too tight, you don’t want to cut circulation ;)
• Wide band rings tend to fit more snugly and you should measure your size with a wide sizer or paper sizer for best fit. It’s usually safe to go with a half size larger than your normal skinny band size.
Ring size is affected by weather, time of day, weight, diet, and many other factors. It’s really best to wear a ring for several weeks, under a variety of conditions, to get a feel for the fit.
Tips for Buying the Ring as a Surprise
• Ask your friend’s mother or sister if they know her finger size.
• Borrow one of your friend’s rings (from the correct finger) and use the Ring Sizer PDF to determine its size.
